School of Family Life Information

The Discipline

1) Family Consumer Sciences Education (FACS Ed)
FACS Ed is a composite major consisting of child development, consumer studies, family studies, housing and interiors, nutrition and food sciences, and textiles and clothing.

2) Home and Family Living (HFL)
Home and family living fosters study of the home as a sacred center for everyday family life and as the basis for a vital community. Theory, research, and practice are used to illuminate the value of everyday home life to foster wellness and provident living in meeting practical family needs such as feeding, housing, clothing, and finance.

3) Marriage, Family, and Human Development (MFHD)
The MFHD program centers on theories, research, and practices related to understanding and strengthening marriage and family life, and optimal human development. Students learn about marital and family processes that lead to healthy marriages and families, and how children, youth, adults and families, develop, change, and face challenges throughout the life course. The teaching strategy of faculty members in the School of Family Life reflect a strong commitment to better critical thinking and problem-solving skills as students become involved in mentored-learning research and outreach experiences.

Undergraduate Programs and Degrees

Career Opportunities

The FACS Ed major prepares students to be licensed by the state of Utah for teaching in the secondary schools. This teaching license can be transferred to other states upon meeting their requirements.

Students who major in HFL are prepared for more effective everyday living and community involvement. They may also develop an area of interest that leads to a home-based business or other professional endeavors.

A bachelor’s degree in MFHD prepares graduates for opportunities in private helping agencies, government, non-government organizations (NGOs), business and schools.  MFHD is an excellent preparation for those pursuing advanced degrees or professional certificates in family studies, human development, marriage and family therapy, school counseling, social work, and clinical psychology among others.

Internship Programs

Faculty members in the School of Family Life believe that internship experience is central to the undergraduate's ability to integrate theory and practice. Thus, every student in the School of Family Life is encouraged to complete an internship/field study.

The School of Family Life internship office can help students find an internship specifically tailored to meet their needs and interests. This office also helps students explore work opportunities related to the content areas of their study.
