History Information

The Discipline

History stands at the center of a liberal arts bridge between the humanities and social sciences. As such, it is the ideal major for the student who wants the broad educational background of a liberal arts degree. Students who study history learn to be good writers, gain valuable analytical skills, and become critical thinkers.

Undergraduate Programs and Degrees

Career Opportunities

Because of the broad range of uses to which historical education can apply, the history major is good preparation for entrance into professions such as law, government service, or business. History can also be valuable training for someone who plans to teach. Individuals with degrees in history work as bankers, lawyers, executives, publishers, or public servants. Jobs can also be found as secondary school teachers, public historians, genealogists, archivists, and, after earning a graduate degree, as professional historians at universities.

Mentoring Program

The Mentoring Program is designed to aid students in choosing a career and to help them have a rewarding experience in the History Department. The mentoring program helps new students by connecting them with a faculty member. Faculty members can offer advice on which courses to take, how to plan for a career in history, and other issues that concern your time in the History Department.

Phi Alpha Theta & The Thetean

Phi Alpha Theta is a professional society whose mission is to promote the study of history through the encouragement of research, quality teaching, publication and the exchange of learning and ideas among historians. We bring students, teachers, and writers of history together for intellectual and social exchanges which promote and assist historical research and publication by our members in a variety of ways.

The Beta Iota Chapter at BYU is one of over 800 active Phi Alpha Theta chapters, totaling over 21,000 members. Our chapter has a distinguished history and has won the "Best Chapter Award" for the largest division (VI) of Phi Alpha Theta for many of the past several years. The Beta Iota Chapter plans to compete for all prizes available from Phi Alpha Theta.

The Thetean is a scholarly student-produced journal representing historical essays written by students at Brigham Young University.
